Dildos and Double Dildos: 3 Titillating Examples of Secret Lesbian Sex in Japanese Art
Sex in imperial Japan was more interesting than we may think
There once was an ancient being who upon encountering another similar to them, spoke:
My body, formed though it be formed, has one place which is formed to excess. Therefore, I would like to take that place in my body which is formed to excess and insert it into that place in your body which is formed insufficiently, and thus give birth to the land. How would this be? — Shinto Myth
Sexuality has been hidden and chastised intermittently throughout Western history, but this reprehension seems to have enjoyed much longevity since Christianity became, so to speak, mainstream. Sure, we are — in some parts of the Western world — making steps toward sexual liberation, both in the act (consensual) and discourse.
But sex is not always been a taboo everywhere in the world. For instance, it was celebrated in Japan for a long time (let’s say the arrival of white people might have changed some stuff). On this point, sex was an important feature of Shinto’s creation myth, it was also — and in correlation to the myth — a channel to enlighten. To today’s point, homosexuality was not really frowned upon. In some instances, it was actually fairly common, and the relationship between men was celebrated.
But, it’s women’s sexuality I’d like to discuss here. In particular, the use of dildos, and double-ended dildos.
See, we tend to think that sex, sex toys, and athletic positions are inventions of modern-day lovers. However, if studying the history of sexuality wasn’t considered taboo, we’d know that we have not invented much.
