6 Modern and Contemporary Italian Artists to Keep an Eye On
Talented painters, tattoos, sculptures, illustrations, and pizza. What more could we ask for?
Fratelli d’ Italia, l’ Italia s…Oh, hey there! Sorry I didn’t expect you to arrive so early, or I was too distracted I lost track of time. As some of you may know I was born and raised (since the age of 6 — long story) in Italy. While I have much in the “negative things to say” bag, today I thought I’d show you something nice.
Italy has a long history of art excellence: Roman sculptors, Leonardo, Gentileschi, Caravaggio, and hundreds more. To this date, Italian craftsmanship is regarded as of the highest quality: leather work, wider fashion, cars, and food. However, the visual arts have gone a little into hiding when considering the global scene. This is surprising for me, not only because one of the most important art exhibition happens in Venice (The Biennale), but especially because the country is full of immensely talented artists.
I have written in the past more extensively about one of my favourite painters, Roberto Ferri, thus, I’ll try not to include him in this list.

1. Monica Berengo
I encountered Monica’s work through an online blog called Artistic Moods. I was immediately captured by the beauty of her illustrations.
Her style has something vintage — possibly the tones — to it, but it also plays incredibly well with both obscure scenes and light, dreamy ones.
2. Gugliermo Castelli
The human figures of Guglielmo Castelli’s canvases and works on paper are fluid and at ease. Every time a body is depicted in a painting, its relationship to the surrounding space is taken into consideration. He appears to have a bird’s eye view.
